She says she had very few problems being Blasian until high school. “I remember wanting to have straight hair and going and getting a relaxer for the first time and how happy I was about it, but it was also something like you know, I had chemical burns from it all kinds of trauma over trying to change what I am,” Martin said.
She loves her easy-breezy natural curly hair now, but at one point as a child, she longed for locks of a different texture. “My mom didn’t know how to handle my hair either, she’d be trying to brush out my hair or comb it and her arms would get tired,” she said. Martin grew up in California, surrounded by her mom’s family in a mostly Asian community. “My mom’s Chinese, and she moved here from Hong Kong when she was 12, and my dad is Black, Spanish and Native American? But we just say Black,” Martin said. She’s heard the nicknames for her ethnic mix “Blasian or Blackinese,” she said.
